New generation of High Dynamic Range Photo software with Pin Warping and Anti-Ghosting. NEW

List of Cameras with autobracketing

Why auto-bracketing?

Auto-Bracketing (A-EV, AEB) is a feature on some cameras that allows to take three successive shots with different EV. Depending on the camera, the difference between each of the autobracketed shots could be anywhere up to two stops in each direction, in half-stop or one-third stop increments.

Using Autobracketing allows to easily capture the HDRI source image even from hand because you don't have to fiddle with the buttons to set different EV settings for each shot.

However you can also use camera that has no auto-bracketing, but then you have to change the EV settings manually between shots. Using tripod is advised (in both cases).

Canon SLR
EOS 300D, 400D
EOS 30D, 1D, 5D
Digital Rebel, XT, XTi

All Canon SLR have Autobracketing in range -2 to 2 EV. To set it press Menu then select AEB and set the green EV marks with left/right arrows or wheel so it shows 3 green marks -2, 0 and +2. To cancel AEB move the marks in oposite direction until they become a single green mark at 0.
To fire 3 shots quickly by holding the shutter you can set the drive to multiple image.

Canon SLR's are excellent choice for HDRI images thanks to its very low noise. You can obtain a very good results using tany of these SLR's.

Canon other
Powershot G7
Powershot S3, S5
Few of the more expensive PowerShot models have AEB. To set the AEB press Func button and then scroll on the left side icons to the icon that says OFF or BKT-Off, here you can select a type of bracketing - AEB.
On G7 the default bracketing is -1 to +1 EV, to change the range, while on the AEB settings press Menu button and then with the wheel you can set the range -2 to +2 (it tooks us a while to find this)

Powershot cameras tends to have higher noise even with low ISO, this may not work well for HDRI as the image may become rather grainy.

Nikon
D80
Nikon D80 has a bit more options for auto-bracketing than other cameras, you can set 3 or 2 images with increment from 0.3 to 2.0 EV. You can also change the orders of the bracketed shots.

It is a great camera for HDRI.

Please note the younger brother D40 has no auto-bracketing

Nikon
D200, D300, D3
D200/D300/D3 has the most option for auto-bracketing from any cameras. It can be used for 2,3,5,7 or 9 successive bracketing shots in a very wide range. The maximum is 9 images in range -4 to +4 EV. That is of course too much for a HDRI, but it later allows you to choose few images from the whole set of nine that covers all the tonal ranges. It has even a dedicated BKT button to set the auto-bracketing. The Fujifilm S5 Pro is also based on the D200.

It is an excellent camera for HDRI.

Nikon
other
Many of the Coolpix cameras have some form of autobracketing, but usually only in the -1EV to 1 EV range.
Olympus SLR
EVOLT E-510, E410
Olympus has only bracketing in the -1 to +1 EV. To set AEB, click Menu, move down to the second set of settings and there is AE BKT at the bottom. You can set it to 3F 1.0 which will create the -1, 0 and +1 EV images.

The -1/+1EV is very often low for HDRI, you can then add -2 and/or +2 EV manually by using the EV button and scrolling the wheel (this can be done with one hand while the second hand will keep the camera steady).

Sony
DSLR-A100
Sony SLR has Autobracketing, but only in range of +/- 0.7EV. That is low for our purpose, hopefully they will address this issue in next model.
Fujifilm
S5200, S5600, S9000
Range only -1EV/1 EV.
Fujifilm
S5 Pro
This camera is based on the Nikon D200 and so it shares its excellent bracketing capabilities. It can be used for 2,3,5,7 or 9 successive bracketing shots in a very wide range. The maximum is 9 images in range -4 to +4 EV.

Also very good choice for HDR images.
